Ferrari officially unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce, on May 25, 2026, in Rome. The launch, however, triggered an immediate backlash, with Ferrari shares falling over 8% the next day, wiping out billions in market value and sparking intense debate about the future of luxury EVs.
Ferrari’s First EV: The Luce
Priced at around €550,000 ($640,000), the Ferrari Luce is a high-performance five-door electric liftback sedan powered by four electric motors producing over 1,050 horsepower. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 2.5 seconds and features an 800V architecture with advanced battery technology.
Designed in collaboration with LoveFrom (founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive), the Luce adopts a sleek, minimalist design that marks a significant departure from Ferrari’s traditional aggressive styling.
Investor and Fan Reaction
The market reacted negatively to the unveiling. Many investors and long-time Ferrari enthusiasts expressed concern that the radical design and shift to electric power could dilute the brand’s iconic heritage, which has long been defined by powerful V12 engines and emotional driving experience.
Former Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo was among the public critics, warning that the move risked harming the brand’s legendary status.
Challenges in Luxury EV Segment
The lukewarm response highlights broader challenges in the luxury electric vehicle market. Softening demand for high-priced EVs, concerns over residual value, and strong competition from Chinese manufacturers have made the transition difficult even for established luxury brands.
Ferrari has moderated its EV targets, now aiming for electric models to represent around 20% of sales by 2030, while continuing to focus heavily on hybrids in the coming years.
What Lies Ahead
Deliveries of the Ferrari Luce are expected to begin in late 2026 in Europe and 2027 in the United States. The company plans a limited rollout to maintain exclusivity.
The success of the Luce will be closely watched as a key test of whether legendary performance brands can successfully transition to full electrification without losing their emotional appeal and loyal customer base.
