In a historic move, Tesla has officially entered the Indian market, opening its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15, 2025. This marks the beginning of Tesla’s retail and service journey in India—an entry anticipated for years.

Tesla Model Y Launched in India

At the Mumbai showroom, Tesla has introduced the Model Y, a fully electric SUV that is already the company’s best-selling model worldwide. The two variants available in India are priced at:

Model Y Long Range AWD: ₹59.9 lakh (ex-showroom)
Model Y Performance: ₹67.9 lakh (up to ₹69 lakh on-road)

Deliveries are expected to begin in Q3 2025. All models are being imported from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China.

Tesla’s India Strategy: Premium First

Despite high expectations for a more affordable EV offering, Tesla is positioning itself in the luxury vehicle segment for its India launch. Due to steep import duties (up to 100%), prices are significantly higher than in the US or Europe. The company is initially targeting urban, affluent buyers who already purchase premium brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Charging Infrastructure and Expansion Plans

Tesla also plans to establish a network of Superchargers across major Indian metros. The company has confirmed that 16 fast-charging points will be launched in Mumbai and Delhi-NCR in the coming months.

Next Showroom Location: Delhi-NCR

Tesla is expected to open its second showroom in Delhi-NCR later this year, further strengthening its presence in northern India. Rumors suggest that the company is also exploring local manufacturing partnerships in the long run, depending on regulatory developments.
